If you knew what the bed linen are really hiding you would probably not sleep well at night. The sheets, pillow cases, bed cover and even the mattress are the perfect places for dust-mites, invisible spiders and mold spores, which can cause an entire series of respiratory diseases or infections, skin diseases, irritations and allergies. So how often do you really need to change the bed sheets?

On bed, sofa or armchairs surfaces, the humidity created by sweat and dead skin cells creates the perfect environment for microorganisms to grow at an accelerated rate. Within two years, a pillow will double its size if it is not cleaned and this is due to the microorganisms lurking in it.

When do you wash the bed sheets?

Therefore, how often do you have to clean the sheets in order to keep safe? Studies show that the bed sheets need to undergo a wash cycle at a temperature of 60 degrees Celsius once a week. In this way they will be disinfected and the number of allergies will be reduced. Since bed sheets are quite big, it is good to take into account washing in two batches. Thus there’s enough room in the washing machine for the bed sheets to get really cleaned. Experts recommend bed sheets made of natural fibers, such as cotton, since it is more resistant and may be washed at a higher temperature.

Clean the mattress

Once you have removed the bed sheets, also take into account cleaning the mattress. You do not have to do this every time you change the bed sheets, but at least once every six months. This is a very good way of killing the dust-mites and refreshing the mattress.

Sprinkle sodium bicarbonate all over the surface of the mattress, leave it in to act for an hour. Then, with the help of a vacuum cleaner, thoroughly vacuum the surface of the mattress. The sodium bicarbonate draws the humidity and absorbs the dirt, leaving the mattress perfectly clean.

Don’t forget the pillows and the duvet

Pillows and duvets can contain even up to 20,000 dust bites, fungi and bacteria. They have to be cleaned once every six months, preferably by an ecological cleaning service. In this way they are washed at very high temperatures.

Do you know what is hiding in the bed sheets?

Dust-mites. They feed on skin dead cells and multiply at an alarming rate. Basically, it is impossible to permanently get rid of them. Nevertheless you can limit their number by using washing cycles for the linen at high temperatures.

Bacteria. Eating in bed is not a hygienic option. Minuscule food leftovers in the bed sheets in combination with sweat will lead to bacteria growing. They can cause some nasty irritations.

Mold spores. The moisture is a proper environment for mold, which can cause severe allergies, and also fungal infections.
